Colonial rule, which forced together different communities (some of which were traditionally hostile to each other) was mainly responsible for producing the situation found today where very few nation states (in the sense that a relatively homogeneous people inhabits a sovereign state) exist. The number of such states, namely Lesotho, Somalia, and eSwatini, demonstrates just how profound the impact of colonialism was on previous polities. In the rest of Africa, most states are multicultural, with often a wide variety of communities, be they ethnic, religious, or regional in nature, living within a country’s borders.
